Product Description

Product Description

With its roots in Ancient Greece, encaustic is a wax-based painting medium, characterized by luminous colour and a lush service. This handbook reveals how to master this beautiful yet demanding medium. It discusses ways to achieve vibrant colour and create surfaces that look as light as a wash or as densely textured as impasto. The author demonstrates how to produce effects from abstract to figurative to minimal, and how to use encaustic techniques in their own art. The book includes examples of artwork from leading encaustic artists such as Jasper Johns, Arthur Dove and Nancy Graves.

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Encaustikos Lovers!, 24 Jul 2002
This book creates a shrine to the ancient art of encaustic and actively encourages the current huge revival of this artform. "Encaustic" from the Greek "Encaustikos", meaning to burn or melt is the term used for painting using molten wax, fusing one pigmented beeswax into another. The bulk of this beautiful book is a gallery of current encaustic artists, displaying the many and varied uses of the medium. This book is very good for the encaustic artist wanting to move on from the basic landscapes and fantasy scenes, onto using the wax in ways they may never have thought of - unusual surfaces, burning methods, sculpting and combining with other media. The rest of the book is concerned with techniques, equipment (some that can be found in the kitchen or at the hardware store), and tips for selling encaustic art. Inspirational.
